Event Design: Not Just a Pretty Space

Hear from LOCK5 designer, Lulu Beasley, what makes outstanding event design and how the small details really matter when it comes to creating temporary event spaces that are genuinely exceptional.

By Lulu Beasley, Designer, LOCK5

LOCK5 has long been known for delivering exceptional temporary event structures and fit outs. What’s changed, and what excites me most as a designer, is how far that offering now goes.

Today, LOCK5 is built around three connected pillars: Design, Fit Out and Experience.

That shift means we’re no longer just creating beautiful structures. We’re designing complete, end-to-end event experiences, where structure, flow, atmosphere and guest journey are considered as one.

That’s where I come in.

Design with structure in mind

I’ve spent my career working in and around temporary event structures, tents, pavilions, warehouses and blank canvases of every kind. That experience matters.

Great event design doesn’t fight the structure; it works with it. Understanding loadings, layouts, access, flow, build sequencing and practical constraints gives design real credibility. It means creativity that’s grounded, deliverable and built to last, not ideas that unravel on site.

My role is to transform a white box into something story-led and human: a space that guides guests intuitively, supports the event’s purpose and feels considered from every angle.

Why LOCK5, why now?

Joining LOCK5 was about potential. Rob’s vision, to touch every part of the temporary event journey, from structure to experience, aligned completely with my own.

LOCK5 was already known for flawless delivery and exceptional fit outs. What this evolution allows is something bigger: a full-service, experience-led approach where structure, design and guest experience are developed together.

We can now have more ambitious, more strategic conversations with clients from the outset. Not just what will it look like? But how will it feel, how will it flow, and how will people remember it?

More than how it looks, it’s how it feels!

When people walk into an event space, they shouldn’t just see a beautiful room. They should feel it; from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave.

I’m not here to fluff cushions or add a few plant pots. I’m here to design the complete experience: the flow through the space, the atmosphere it creates, and the details no one notices until they’re missing. Every touchpoint matters. Every decision has intent.

When it’s done properly, guests don’t just look around, they feel comfortable, cared for and completely immersed. That’s what turns an event into an experience. And it takes far more than window dressing.

Breaking down the silos

Too often, events are still delivered in silos.

Structure here. Catering there. Styling added later. Experience stitched together at the last minute.

That’s what we’re changing at LOCK5.

By bringing design and experience into the conversation from the very first brief, we’re working collaboratively with event agencies, caterers, production partners and temporary structure specialists from day one. Everyone is aligned early. Everyone understands the guest journey. And everyone delivers better as a result, from contractor to customer.

The outcome is seamless, intuitive and genuinely memorable.

The details are never small

When I walk into an event as a guest, I notice the details immediately. The texture of a surface. The scent in the air. How easy it is to move through the space.

Those cues tell you whether someone has really thought about the guest experience.

That same care runs through every LOCK5 project, from inviting lounge seating and well-positioned bars to practical elements like accessible bathrooms, clear circulation and spaces that allow guests to pause and breathe. The difference between an event that looks good and one that truly moves people is anticipation, thoughtfulness and emotion woven into every corner.

Experience-led, end to end

Experience today is about authenticity, care and delight. It’s about translating brand story into a physical environment that works visually, emotionally and functionally.

That might mean real planting, tactile textures and moments of surprise, but it also means anticipating needs before they arise. Queue management. Spaces for downtime. Clear wayfinding. Bathrooms that exceed expectations. When those things are right, guests relax. And when guests relax, the event succeeds.

The result is effortless, immersive and unforgettable.

Not just a pretty space

Ultimately, what I want guests to feel when they leave a LOCK5 event is simple: nothing was overlooked. They were comfortable, engaged and genuinely delighted from start to finish.

If they leave thinking about what was missing, we’ve failed. If they leave thinking, “that was exceptional”, we’ve done our job.

Because for us, design isn’t window dressing. It’s strategy. It’s creativity brought to life across the full guest journey.

And at LOCK5, that’s exactly what we’re delivering.
